Posh picnic

There are a few things more civilised than the French Affaire picnic experience at Le Verger in the Western Cape’s Devon Valley.

Picture the scene: a gorgeous hostess dressed as a French maid greets you as you enter the glass conservatory. Fine mist cools the air. There is station after station of gourmet picnic treats: huge wheels of cheese, charcuterie, crusty bread, pâté, olives and plenty of wine.

Then for the hot stuff – gracious waiters bearing miniature cast-iron pans filled with prawns, calamari and mussels circle guests sitting on picnic blankets on the lawn.

There are secret tables tucked all over the expansive garden; find one under a lemon tree, or sit at a long table with friends in a separate conservatory. No matter where you choose, you’re guaranteed a view of Franschhoek valley below.

And the best part? It’s a steal at R125 per person, including wine and all your picnic goodies. The French Affaire picnic is available on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm until 3pm. Call 021 865 2339 to book.

One lucky couple can win this experience and more, a weekend to the value of R15 000.
