August sees Cape Towns Twelve Apostles Hotel launching its Heritage Month and, with it, executive head chef Roberto de Carvalhos Portuguese Wednesdays in the newly refurbished 24-hour café.
In authentic Portuguese tradition, guests will be welcomed with a refreshing caipirinha and snacks such as rissóis de camarão (shrimp turnovers) and pastéis de bacalhau (cod fritters), before tucking into starters of caldo verde (green soup) or moelas (stewed gizzards).
The main-course buffet is an epic affair and stars the likes of bacalhau com natas (cod and potato baked in a cream sauce), galinha à piri-piri (a fiery chicken dish), febras de porco panadas (Portuguese-style marinated pork schnitzels), lulas grelhadas (grilled baby calamari tubes with garlic and piri-piri) and trinchado.
Desserts are equally decadent and include Robertos signature sweets, pastél de nata (lemon custard tart), mousse de chocolate and aletria (angel hair pasta pudding with cinnamon, berry compote and crème fraîche).
The Portuguese evenings will commence on 4 August and will set you back R255 per person.
