Your pizza hit list: Where to get great slices in Cape Town

Cape Town has an abundant supply of pizzerias serving up an abundant supply of traditional, modern, thick- and thin-crust pizzas. To help you on your pizza pursuit, here’s our list of fantastic spots around the city that keep us coming back for another cheesy slice.

Bardelli’s (Kenilworth and Gardens)

The Bardelli’s pizza and pasta sections are extensive, offering loads of choices for vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. For a veggie-friendly option, try the Mediterranean with feta, olives, spinach, garlic, sundried tomatoes and sesame seeds. Carnivores are taken care of with The Pappa G featuring matured steak, mushrooms and blue cheese, or the Cristini with smoked chicken, spring onion and cream cheese. There are also classics like the margherita and regina.

Big Route Pizzeria (Green Point)

Situated on the Green Point strip, this busy spot offers a winning combo of pizzas and cocktails. With almost too many from which to choose, the menu boasts interesting options like the Ciclista with mozzarella, caramelised onions, gorgonzola, brie cheese and pine nuts with a sweet green tea dressing; the Sensuale with aubergine, artichokes, olives, mushrooms and grated zucchini; and the Safari with springbok carpaccio, Japanese mayo, Dijon mustard, balsamic reduction, sundried tomato pesto and toasted seeds. If all else fails, the classics are also still prominent favourites on the menu. Gluten-free bases are available at no extra charge.

Look forward to puffy and satisfyingly chewy Neapolitan-style pizzas with elegant toppings. Choose from options like the Delre, which is a rich Bianca-style pizza with truffle spread, mozzarella, mushroom and prosciutto, and the Diavalo with fresh mozzarella, a chilli-and-tomato base, chorizo, cherry tomatoes and parsley. Vegetarians can enjoy the Mozza Pizza Bianca with mozzarella, mushrooms, caramelised onions, goat’s cheese and cherry tomatoes.

A national go-to for great pizzas, Col’Cacchio serves up something for everyone. Try the Prinipessa with basil, cherry tomatoes, and Galbani fior di latte mozzarella for extra cheese pull. Other top choices include the Morituri with chicken, bacon, avo, feta and red pepper, and the Stagionata with ham, mushroom, olives and artichokes. Also available are half-and-half options, wheat- and gluten-free bases, and vegan pizzas.

Da Vinci’s on Kloof (Gardens)

This laid-back restaurant is known for its creative take on thin-crust pizzas. Options to try are the signature Da Vinci with bacon, avo, mushroom and garlic; the veggie-friendly Warhol with Mediterranean vegetables and pesto; and the Rembrandt with roast butternut, spinach, Roquefort cheese and Peppadews.

Earthfire Pizza (Mojo Market, Sea Point)

Thanks to the Mojo Market in Sea Point, Earth Fire’s glorious pizzas are available seven days a week. The super thin-crust bases are topped with simple favourites like fior di latte mozzarella, ham and mushroom, and ham and pineapple. Other interesting toppings include fig and brie, smoked chicken and basil pesto. Grab one to go or find a spot in the market to enjoy with live music.

Ferdinando’s (Observatory)

This gem in Obs serves authentic homemade pizzas in an energetic yet comfortable setting. Try options like the Parmigiana with thinly sliced pan-fried aubergine, provolone cheese, tomato sauce and mozzarella; the Turbanite with mozzarella, feta, caramelised onions and zucchini; or the Porcellina with buffalo mozzarella, porcini mushrooms and shaved parmesan. The team also churns out meaty favourites, seafood-topped slices and even vegan options.

Giulio’s (City Bowl) ?

This city bowl lunch spot has secretly become a hit pizza spot with its wood-burning oven. There’s everything from the classic fior di latte-topped margherita and the salty salami-laden Diavola to popular options like the Pizza di Casa with bacon, avo and feta, or the Quattro Stagioni calzone with ham, mushrooms, olives and artichokes.

Hail Pizza (City Bowl)

This sneaky hidden gem behind Clarke’s is slowly becoming the hottest pizza spot in the city. The team serves up some tasty pizza creations in two different sizes, which come in options like the Ciao Bella with crème fraîche, caramelised onions, lardons and two eggs; the Hail Kale with gorgonzola and grana padano; or the Mushroom Magic with brown, button and oyster mushrooms, fior di latte, smoked mozzarella and garlic. The bases are crisp and chewy at the same time, making for the most satisfying bite.

La Frasca (Gardens)

Small tables and fairy lights make this a worthy neighbourhood gem to visit. The crisp pizzas are made with stone-ground flour and come topped with ingredients like feta, olives and oven-cooked salami; home-cured ham, aubergine and ricotta; springbok carpaccio and spinach; or bacon, avo and feta.

Lupa Osteria (V&A Waterfront) ?

The pizzas here are made with imported Italian flour and baked in a traditional wood-fired oven. Tuck into cheesy offerings such as The Amy with butternut, feta, pumpkin seeds and rocket; Meat Lovers with bacon, ham and salami; or the Sarah with Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. Gluten-free bases are available at an additional cost. You can also swap normal mozzarella on any pizza for creamy buffalo mozzarella.

Massimo’s (Hout Bay) ?

The thin-based pizzas here are made using stone-ground Eureka flour and fior di latte mozzarella. Look out for ones topped with garlic butter, pancetta and carbonara sauce; soft goat’s cheese, roasted garlic and thyme; or spicy chilli con carne with smoked mozzarella, jalapeños, avo and sour cream. There’s also a range of pizzas from which the proceeds support local charities.

Nonna Lina (Gardens and Sea Point)

Nonna Lina’s pizzas are baked in traditional wood-fired ovens to deliver crispy edges that are topped with flavours of Sicily. Order the Siciliana with capers, olives and grilled aubergines; the Nonna Lina with prosciutto crudo, chopped rosa tomatoes and shaved pecorino; or the Tonno, which is topped with tomato, mozzarella and tuna. The Estate is perfect for those who prefer a simple slice. It’s topped with fresh rosa tomatoes, buffalo-style mozzarella and basil leaves.

Pizza Warehouse (Gardens) ?

This is the newest addition to the edgy Yard 6 on Roodehoek Street. Locals can now get their fix with four different styles of pizza: the Neapolitan, a traditional Naples-style saucy pizza; the Romano, a square puffed crust pizza; the New Yorker, massive in size with a variety of toppings; and the California, a thin-crust pizza. The dough for each pizza is carefully handcrafted and allowed to ferment for at least 24 hours for maximum flavour. Each pizza is made fresh to order and arrives piping hot so it can be eaten at its best. Two favourites include the cheesy margherita with mozzarella and pecorino, or the hearty quattro staggioni with olives, artichokes, mushrooms and prosciutto.

Posticino Ristorante (Hout Bay and Sea Point)

This cosy and super laid-back Italian trattoria is great to visit after a day at the beach or for a quick mid-week bite. Traditional thin-crust bases are cooked to crispy cheesy perfection in a wood-fired pizza oven. The Carabinieri with chilli, garlic, green peppers, mushrooms and olives is a favourite; else try the Strega with chicken livers, onion and chilli for something a little different. The seemingly endless list of toppings also allows you to make your own combo. Gluten-free options are also available. Pro tip: The team has recently opened a pizza-and-pasta hatch at the pavilion on the Sea Point Promenade, so you can grab a slice after your sunset walk.
