In September, we announced the start of the seventh annual Col’Cacchio Celebrity Chef Series, in which top local chefs create gourmet pizzas for a good cause. In a surprise twist, this year the chefs will partner with South African sports heroes.
How does it work? Every month a selected athlete will share their favourite pizza toppings with the chef they’ve been partnered with, and the chef will tweak their suggestions to come up with something unique and delicious. Every time you choose one of those marvellous creations from a Col’Cacchio branch, R5 goes to the Children’s Hospital Trust, so they can upgrade the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
It sounds good, and so do the pizzas! September kicked off (appropriately, given the Rugby World Cup), with the ‘Gold-en-Green’ pizza, a collaboration between rugby player Butch James and Kamini Pather (of MasterChef SA fame).
For October, it’s Proteas cricketer JP Duminy’s turn to bat. He and Wynand van Rooyen (co-founder of The Flying Boar Pop-Up Eatery and the youngest winner of the Sunday Times Chef of the Year competition, in 2011) are serving up the Jammin’ Chipotle pizza – a spicy offering with a Thai taste. The Jammin’ Chipotle combines JP’s favourite, jerk chicken, with mozzarella, feta, brinjal chutney, coriander and toasted coconut flakes, all generously scattered over a Tabasco Chipotle Sauce-infused tomato base.
To support the Col’Cacchio Celebrity Chef Series, sponsored by Heineken, Tabasco, Place in the Sun wines, Coca-Cola, Rialto, Appletiser and Parmalat, help them meet their fundraising target by choosing the Jammin’ Chipotle from a Col’Cacchio branch this month.
