Partner content: 2020 – The year we appreciated what we couldn’t have

2020, ‘that’ year we’ll never forget was about staying healthy, both physically and mentally. And adjusting to a whole ‘new normal’ and way of life. We missed family, we missed friends and realised how many ‘ordinary’ things we simply took for granted. But with any challenge, and the right creative, positive mindset, there is always inspiration to find opportunity, and Durbanville Hills proved this to be true.

We stayed bubbly and managed to launch a new, exciting member of our family: Honeysuckle Demi-Sec.

We also continued to make and sell wine, when we could, given the restrictions, and even did some Zoom tastings. The mother of invention, necessity, gave us new wings and we looked at how our restaurant could still be hugely popular, with more space between tables and even without wine. And when the restaurant was closed, the winery became a food distribution point for a while, helping to distribute much-needed food into communities negatively affected by lockdown.

Now, as restrictions are lifting and we’re slowly getting back to the winery and estate that we always knew, we invite you to take an inspiring trip to the place that stayed true to the spirit of creativity and innovation throughout 2020 – Durbanville Hills. Here, iconic natural surroundings and the creative energy of our people come together to create a perfect collection of wines and experiences.

Our defining character emanates from our vineyards’ close proximity to the Atlantic and Indian oceans; the swirling mists and sea breezes that cool the vineyards on hot summer afternoons; and an almost endless variety of hills and slopes. Here the grapes ripen slowly to perfection in shale-origin soils. The result is a range of cool climate wines with intense fruit appeal, finesse and complexity that reflect their unique provenance.

Our winemakers choose only the best fruit from nine select farms and 770ha of vineyard, and with the advantage of a technologically advanced ultramodern cellar facilities, our winery was designed for detailed craft, allowing batches from different vineyards to be vinified separately.

In this respect, our winemakers are inspired by Cape Town’s long tradition of artisanal craft and experimentation with wines as versatile as Cape Town itself.

The Hills Range offers fresh and enticing wines that suit contemporary palates. The premium Collectors Reserve is truly unique. To connect the winelands and the city, Theo Vorster, a Capetonian artist, was commissioned to impart his vision of prominent local landmarks onto each bottle.

The Tangram Red Blend and White Blends are only released in exceptional years. This range is the pinnacle of the area’s unique cool climate terroir. A perfect expression of how viticulture and creative culture connect.

Try one of our unique tastings or enjoy the spectacular views and dining at our award-winning restaurant, The Tangram, under head chef Tamzyn Ehlers. She sources the finest ingredients from local producers to create authentic, seasonal dishes.
