New Viljoensdrift bubbly takes a bow

The Viljoen family of Viljoensdrift Wine Estate outside Robertson recently launched their first Méthode Cap Classique, the 2009 Villion Brut – a combined labour of love for the Viljoen brothers.

What started with the cultivation of the estate’s 12-year-old block of chardonnay grapes by viticulturist Manie, resulted in a complex, creamy Cap Classique by Fred, two years later.

In celebration of the launch of the estate’s maiden MCC, doe-eyed friends and journos were treated to a romantic river cruise and candlelit dinner this Valentine’s Eve past.

Upon arrival guests enjoyed sangrias and snacks against a beautiful backdrop of the Breede River, before being ushered into the old-fashioned cinema for the formalities, which included a screening of the history of Viljoensdrift, as well as an introduction of the Villion – by the suitably proud cellar master, Fred Viljoen.

The subsequent moonlight river meander was spent sampling the sparkling goods to a soundtrack of romantic ditties courtesy of violinist, Wilken Calitz. Back on terra firma Fred’s wife, Lindy, laid out a sumptuous candlelit feast at the estate’s tasting room, with freely flowing Viljoensdrift wines and a live musical performance by Niel Rademan adding to the rosy glow of the evening.
