Breakfast until 3pm, proper coffee and remarkably good pizza and pasta: there’s a reason Stretta Café is a favourite among Hillcrest residents.
Stretta is a haven for those who believe in the magical powers of a good breakfast, which is served here until 3pm. A breakfast pan (like one with chorizo, cherry tomatoes, bacon and eggs) will beat most voracious appetites into submission. Or you could try a homemade panini topped with tomato salsa, crispy bacon, egg and wild rocket.
The remainder of the menu is essentially Italian, which is exemplified with dishes like grilled calamari served on warm Tuscan beans, and the veal with marsala wine. A dish of spaghetti with roasted butternut, caramelised onion, feta, bread crumbs, parmesan and balsamic glaze has, understandably, earned local cult status, while their remarkable pizzas include classic and gourmet variations.
Coffee is a major drawcard. Stretta is the exclusive supplier of Lineage coffee, the beans of SA’s 2014 champion barista, Craig Charity. The wine list has broad appeal and covers all the popular varietals, or diners can choose to get to grips with the nuances of local craft beers.
Waiters are warm and friendly and exude genuine hospitality. The team is closely observed by management, so it’s unlikely that anything will go amiss.
This is prime culinary real estate for locals, who arrive in droves. The modern trattoria incorporates two outside areas, but it’s hard not to be drawn to the interior, which has an honest, homely feel. Wooden furniture is cleverly contrasted with utilitarian white tiles, exposed light bulbs and concrete floors.
The pizza, pasta and gnocchi are available in wheat-free versions.
