New review: Gourmet crumpets and banting meals at Posh, The Eatery in Port Elizabeth

An oasis of calm in buzzing Stanley Street in Richmond Hill, this restaurant is perhaps best known for its startling array of crumpets. It also serves up some hearty mains. Petro Lotz puts Posh through its paces

Food

Breakfast at Posh is all about crumpets – any way you could want – from muesli crumpets with fresh fruit and honey (although the honey drizzled over the entire plate ends up being a sticky affair) to the savoury crumpet Benedict.

During the rest of the day, patrons can go gaga for the panko calamari, followed by a fillet of beef stuffed with blue cheese and pecan nuts, adorned with an orange liqueur sauce and served on butternut mash.

If you’re gunning for a quicker lunch, the hoisin beef wrap makes for a joyful bite.  Hungry vegetarians will instantly cheer up at the sight of the warm chickpea and basil pesto salad.

For those with a sweet tooth there are decadent options like a deep-fried pancake with Lindt ganache filling and a rich rum, honey and orange sauce, or a frozen honey and cinnamon cheesecake.

There is also a long list of banting-friendly options on offer, from bulletproof coffee and mains with cauliflower mash to banting-friendly desserts.

Drinks

Thirsty guests will perk up when presented with a complimentary carafe of herbed water on arrival. The wine list offers mostly easy-drinking wines, with one or two high-end options for special occasions. Most of the wines are available by the glass. In true bistro tradition, the coffee is delicious, and the hot chocolate is offered in a huge, comforting cup.

Service

Service can be a tad slow and average, but it’s friendly. Staff have a tendency to leave clearing plates on the chest of drawers and sideboards.

Ambience

The white, painted floors of the eatery offer the perfect backdrop for the centrepiece: a marble-topped table and crowned with a bunch of flowers. Rows of Fornasetti faces on the walls and serving counters – which are made up of of wooden chests of drawers and sideboards – add to the charm. Outside, wooden tables with benches, modern chairs, funky red awnings and red pots of cacti, create a fresh and inviting look.

And…

A stand with British pony magazines will make sure that single visitors are kept entertained.
