Fans of Patachou in Rivonia will be pleased to know that a new branch of the patisserie has opened on an attractive corner in Parktown North, linking together two restaurant streets already well known for great food.
Opposite the three Frenchmen at Patachou (chefs Patrick Moreau and Laurent Choukroun, along with the third director, Hugues Panassié) is a Parisian pâtisserie, Lila. The teams all know each other and love the proximity and their shared interest.
What’s different here at the Patachou in Parktown North is the open quality, quite unlike anything in a mall, and the family atmosphere (There are even baby chairs!) The kitchen is larger and there is room for a juice extractor to make just-fresh beverages.
The menu features the same wonderful all-day breakfasts such as croque monsieur and the spinach pot (chockful of cheeses, tomato and eggs), stuffed croissants and the must-have macaron frappe. There are magnificent salads and light lunch items, too. If you feel like a hamburger, it comes with exquisitely crispy potato croquettes.
But what you’re really here for is the seemingly never-ending selection of fabulous patisseries on display. Everyone has a favourite until they try the next one – and they seem to go on forever.
You can’t make a reservation at Patachou Parktown North, but if it’s full (which is often), the grounds are lovely and there is ample place to dawdle while you slaver in anticipation.
