A new fridge created by LG allows you to monitor what’s in your fridge via an internal camera, which snaps selfies (shelfies?) and sends them to your smartphone or tablet.
The wide-angle camera detects the opening and closing of the fridge, taking a pic to let you know what was inside when it was last opened. (So you can check if your housemate/significant other/beloved child has eaten all of your cheese without informing you.)
The chatting system (with which you’ll converse with your fridge) uses natural language processing to allow owners to control, monitor and share content with their appliances. There’s even a range of stickers (those are emojis, right?), which “add an enjoyable, personable component to conversations”, according to LG.
The fridge will also recommend meal ideas and recipes based on what’s inside. Perhaps most terrifying of all, the system can also make personalised meal plans based on age, sex, weight and height – i.e. your fridge could put you on a diet.
In addition to the fridge, LG has also created a smart oven, which will ask users what they plan on cooking that day and help them find a recipe. When ready, the oven will set its own temperature and cooking time.
The HomeChat(™) range (which also includes a chatty washing machine) is currently only available in Korea and the USA, but there are plans to introduce the range in other markets soon.
