New Braamfontein hot spot: Great Dane

When it comes to creating a vibe within a CBD, Joburg is the business. The opening of Great Dane, situated in the up-and-coming urban area of Braamfontein, certainly has tails wagging.

The people
If cool and trendy is your thing, Braamfontein (or ‘Braamies’, as it is affectionately known) is the place to be. Great Dane has quickly established itself as one of the premier watering holes amongst the creative crowd, young professionals and hipsters. It’s an inner city hotspot that combines two of life’s great pleasures: gourmet hotdogs and great tunes. The masterminds behind it all? Brothers Gert and Stefan Schoonraad, responsible for another Joburg icon, Gin in Greenside.

The vibe
The grey hound already has a loyal following despite only being open since March. Word must have spread about the password system. Here’s how it works: each night the DJs on the line-up are given a password to spread to their friends and followers. Those who know the code get in for free and others pay R20, depending on how busy the evening is. Weekends always ensure some spin action from DJs in booths lined with hardcover books.

The design
Think mismatched, quirky vintage lanterns, wooden chairs, exposed brick walls and a floor made of five cent coins. Word on the street is this humble coincollection adds up to R3000 – the perfect platform to squeak some takkie after a bite and beer.

The food
Great Dane puts the hot back into hotdog. A small menu ensures something for everyone, even vegetarian worsies.

The Plain Jane keeps things simple with homemade mustard and tomato sauce on a large sesame hotdog roll with hand-cut fries. It’s served on a wooden board; cutlery optional.

The Rottweiler is smeared with German mustard, emmenthal cheese and topped with a mixed veggie pickle. Prepare toleave a trail of napkins in your wake with this one.

For those who need the heat, there’s always The Hunter with chilli paste, mature cheddar cheese, caramelised onions andsliced jalapenos. Ensure a cold beer is at hand.

The drinks
What would a hotdog be without beer? Craft is the name of the beer game at the Dane, but if wine is more your thing, then have a look at the small but solid wine list. Ask the barmen for one of those pink shooters.

The service
Efficiently speedy and interactive with plenty of great banter.

The verdict
This is a vibey spot for chilling in the urban jungle, so unwind with a beer while sporting a pair of Wayfarers. Spotting local Indie celebs is a given and flashmob-style dancing a must once the beats start pumping. All with hotdogs in hand, of course.
