Freedom Café, the brainchild of ad man, design guru, award-winning cookbook writer and entrepreneur Neil Roake, is the hottest new venue in town.
It nestles behind Bean Bag Bohemia in St Mary’s Avenue, Greyville, and is attached to a quirky boutique hotel, The Concierge.
The restaurant is housed in a red shipping container, expanded with glass. The concise menu is supplemented by daily specials, and all the dishes are as attractive on the plate as they are on the palate.
Exotic mushroom tarts, fresh mussels in a roasted red pepper and pancetta sauce, pork, chorizo and portobellini mushroom terrine with red onion and pink peppercorn vinaigrette, and smoked Franschhoek salmon on zucchini fritters are typical fare. The venue is open from 6am to 6pm.
