Nostalgic thoughts flooded back one night last week whilst eating sticky ribs at Bombay Bicycle Club in Cape Town. A side dish of really tasty veggies was served at the table: old-fashioned caramelised pumpkin, creamy potato bake and cheesy broccoli. And at no extra cost! Just like the good old days. Sitting there (feeling quite silly wearing a captains hat, as hats are the theme), I thoroughly enjoyed every morsel.
Things were a little more grown up on Sunday in the Winelands. We were sitting outside on a beautiful day at Terroir, when a small dish (it was a side, after all) of truffled macaroni was presented. And aptly devoured. We all thought how a big bowl would be the perfect Sunday night supper – macaroni smothered in a glorious cream and truffle sauce.
Later that week, at Christof’s, a lovely bistro in the centre of town in Stellenbosch, I had my last bit on the side. To accompany a dish of slow cooked rib-eye and braised fennel, a pot of dauphinoise potatoes was served. Piping hot, thinly sliced layers of potatoes, garlic and cream – the potatoes soaking up every inch of taste.
What a treat to have a little something on the side.
Happy eating!
