Magnum’s pop-up store is back: bigger, better and even more Instagrammable

The secret is out: the new Magnum pop-up is at Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square. Two years ago, we had one in Rosebank but this is altogether different. This place is palatial – so no more (ok well, just a little bit of) queuing at the dipping and topping-ing sections.

First your Magnum is whipped out of fashion wrapper, to be dipped in the chocolate of your choice. You should probably decided now whether your end goal is beauty or deliciousness – if you’re going to be Instagramming this; we can recommend the dark or white chocolate, rather than the delicious but less sleek-looking milk chocolate.

As your Magnum drips chocolate, start casting your eye over the toppings. The most yummy are the brown and caramel-coloured ones, like crumbed chocolate cupcake, crushed almond praline, ginger biscotti, chocolate brownie and honeycomb. But the coloured items – like pink peppercorn praline, candied rose petals, chilli flakes, bright popping candies, minty-chocs, sweet-mint toppings and silver balls – are the good lookers on the black or white bases. Candied rose petals and crushed popcorn on black chocolate and silver balls with sweet mint on white chocolate are stunners. The most decadent is chocolate on chocolate, on chocolate, on chocolate.

Once you’ve made up your mind, they toss your choices into a silver tumbler, and pour onto your setting Magnum base. Then comes a squiggly drizzle of chocolate and finally a glamorous lady slaps a Magnum choc button onto the whole lot.

This time around, there’s also a high fashion link-up with the ice cream. Designer Gert-Jan Coetzee has designed a dress for every Magnum. There are also very lovely scarves, bags, sarongs, evening shirts, iPad covers, wallets, and even the most wonderful socks to buy! All Magnum-fashion themed. But don’t dawdle too long over these – or your masterpiece will melt.

Fling yourself onto one of the creamy sofas and get stuck into your own piece of heaven. Before going back for another entirely different, mouth-watering, redesigned Magnum.

You’ve got until mid-May to try about 25 different toppings on all the bases, under all the squiggles. Every day from 9am.

Start looking for the entrance to the store when you’re on the Michelangelo Hotel side of the ‘square’. It’s the rather grand shop, L39.
