There can sometimes be the misconception that the path to becoming a top chef requires money and an extensive culinary-school education. Ebie du Toit dispels this myth as he takes Relebogile Mabotja through his journey from a dishwasher at The Test Kitchen to head chef at Eat Out 2-star restaurant The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg on the Food Feature on 702.
Under the mentorship of Luke Dale Roberts, Ebie’s love for food was nurtured in the scullery of The Test Kitchen and his creativity unleashed. He learnt discipline, humility and self-respect in the kitchen, but he also found family: “I spend more time with the people in the kitchen than [I do] at home, so I kind of fell in love with the people that I’m surrounded [by],” he says.
