Lager, lager, lager

Paulaner Bräuhaus at the V&A Waterfront does Oktoberfest best – this side of Germany anyway. This Bavarian restaurant-cum-brewery heaves with jolly Germans, beer lovers and good-time seekers alike.

Pigtails and rosy cheeks are the norm, and the beers are generous and reasonably priced. Start with a lager and a salty pretzel, and don’t forget to try the pork-lard spread, then move onto a weissbier (German-style wheat beer) paired with crispy roast pork knuckle. Finally, if you’re still standing, grab a tankard of specially made Oktoberfest beer, jump on a table and get ready to sing along to the oompah band.
