Popular breakfast spot La Vie en Rose has moved from its former garden location in Illovo to the Killarney Country Club in Houghton, Johannesburg.
It was always more than a breakfast haven. Many regulars would have meetings there over Moroccan-inspired lunch dishes or sip on great coffees in the garden, not often venturing indoors. The food has always been homely and comforting with happy-making portions.
La Vie en Rose in its new incarnation does dinners now, taking the opportunity to present itself differently to a new eating audience in Houghton. “It’s not fine dining in the formal sense at all,” says owner Rony Muller.
“We’re just doing what we have always done, only better,” adds co-owner Yanky Woolf. Rony agrees, “It’s an upgrade for us. I think we’ve grown up!”
The staff now wear muted greys more than their landmark rosy pink, and the new patio-garden is more elegant, as is the inside restaurant, with its floor-to-ceiling windows.
The trademark La Vie en Rose breakfasts and lunches are still on the menu for now, and the new patrons love the dinners and the fabulous desserts, too. At the end of July, the menu will be updated to appeal even more to the new clientele. We happened to overhear some magic words: Churros with homemade halva ice cream…
