Know thy vodka

Vodka, the iconic elixir of cold countries, has been warming the toes and hearts of paupers and kings for centuries. In times of war and in times of celebration, vodka was there to fortify and reward.

These days, this chic spirit is the favourite base for cocktails. Its ‘neutral’ flavour makes the perfect building block for all kinds of inventive mixing. Also, there are few things that epitomise culinary luxury more, than spoonfuls of caviar with a chilled glass of vodka.

It’s even inspired fashion. Judy Garland asked her dress designer to make a muff big enough to conceal a bottle of vodka for the premier of her movie, A Star Is Born.

Vodka bars are increasing in popularity, as are the number of brands. There’s a vodka out there for every wallet, palate, occasion and cocktail.

What it’s made of

Liquor romantics espouse that real vodka can only be made from potatoes. This view is as out-dated as it is old-fashioned. Vodka is made from barley, wheat or rye and in some niche distilleries, or with home-brewed moonshine, potatoes. Sometimes, even grapes, as in the case of premium French vodka brand, Cîroc Vodka

Your guide to popular brands

There are flavoured versions of this vodka too. Mix it into cocktails as well as martinis, and it’s delicious served on the rocks.

Belvedere Vodka is made in the Polish tradition of vodka making. A mash of Dankowskie Golden Rye is distilled four times, for clarity and purity. On the nose, there’s a hint of vanilla and cream. On the palate, it has a rich and velvety texture. Serve ice-cold in a chilled glass.

Cîroc Vodka is distilled from wine grapes called ‘snap frost’. This elegant and sophisticated vodka is happiest served on the rocks with a twist of zest.

Grey Goose Vodka is made from French wheat, and water, which is naturally filtered through champagne limestone. This is as much of a premium party drink as it is a dinner party pick-me-up.

Ketel One Vodka is crafted in small batches at a time in a coal-fired copper pot stil. Drink it on the rocks, with tonic water and lemon, or try the orange infused Ketel One Citroen in a cocktail mix.

Smirnoff Vodka the ‘world’s favourite vodka’ is available in over 130 countries. This smooth, accessible vodka comes in a variety of formats: there’s alcopop Smirnoff Ice, premium version Smirnoff Black, and the more accessible Smirnoff No. 21.

Stolichnaya Vodka is a Russian vodka that is distilled four times and is made from wheat and rye. This is a premium vodka with an accessible price tag. Smooth and light with a hint of citrus, this vodka works as both a cocktail base and a sipper.
