One of Johannesburg’s best-known food and design markets, Market on Main, is expanding its presence to Pretoria, where it will trade as a monthly Saturday market. While a launch date has yet to be confirmed, owner Jacques van der Watt hopes to have the market up and running at their second location at 012 Central in Tshwane Central by the end of May 2015.
Like its Joburg counterpart, which will continue to trade at Arts on Main every Sunday, the market will celebrate the best in local food and design. While the Pretoria incarnation will feature traders from Johannesburg and surrounds, owner Jacques Van Der Watt hopes to use the market as a platform to showcase the capital city’s talent. “We want to give opportunities to as many Pretoria traders as possible. I think it will give the market a unique aspect,” says Jacques.
Initially, the market will trade once a month, but will likely appear on a more regular basis once it finds its feet. The market’s new location at 012 Central, a large historic shed-like venue located in downtown Pretoria, played a huge part in sealing the deal. “We were approached by City Block and we just fell in love with the space,” Jacques explains, adding that he thinks there is a gap that needs to be filled: “Market on Main is unique in that it’s a city market with a family element, and I think Pretoria could do with something like this.”
The Market on Main website is now accepting stallholder applications for the Pretoria market. Apply now and be sure to keep your eye out for updates on Facebook and Twitter.
Looking forward to the MARKET ON MAIN
Looking forward. Just hope that Jacques will ensure it is a safe environment.
Unlike Jhb CBD that got their act together, Pta CBD is rather dangerous & crime ridden……parking your car in the Pta CBD is very risky.
What will happen to #Market@TheSheds?
Hi there. We’ve got the scoop! Market@TheSheds is now operating as a pop-up market and will trade at different locations around the Pretoria CBD on the last Saturday of every month. You can catch them this Saturday at Old Moyo’s Building in Fountain Valley.
We can’t wait. Now I can enjoy the market in my own hood.
What’s the street address of 012 Central market? This article really needs a bit more detail re the location. Is this different to The Sheds opposite the Reserve Bank on Church street? Ps You can park safely at the State Theatre & walk to the Sheds, even Park a bit further on Schoeman street at Tramshed parking. 5 min walk and it’s safe. I’ve worked in govt offices there since 2007.
Hi Lala. You can find 012 Central at 385 Helen Joseph Street, which was previously Church Street. Hope this helps!
Hey guys,
Is the Pretoria market still only operational monthly?
Was hoping to check it out on August 29th.
