At first we thought it was an April Fools joke, after earlier plans for a relocation, but a little street-level reconnaissance confirms that the rumours are true. As of today, Jardine Bakery is Jason, named for its baker and co-owner, Jason Lilley.
There is no reason to panic though: the same scrumptious bacon croissants and amazing chocolate brownies are still available through the buzzing hatch, but according to the man known as Captain Bread, Jason will be a whole new business. What’s more, it’s expanding. “We’re taking over the Jardine space”, Jason explains.
The new venture will take its cue from Jason’s breads and will be open for breakfast and lunch, but not dinner. “We will have a liquor licence though”, he says with a grin. Jason hopes to launch his new menu in early May, though it’s too early to tell exactly when the new venture – Jason hesitates to say ‘restaurant’ – will open.
Renovations are already underway, and it sounds as though the basis of the business is sound: “Bread, beer and bubbles,” Jason sums up.
