International acclaim for Cape Town restaurants

theshowroom restaurant in Green Point and Jardine restaurant in Bree Street, Cape Town, have been awarded sought-after international Condé Nast Traveler’s ‘Hot Tables 2007’ listings as part of their top 95 restaurants world-wide.

Condé Nast Travelers annual ‘Hot List’ issue is the insiders guide to the newest and hottest hotels, restaurants and spas opened all over the world in the last year. To develop the list, the magazines editors check out hundreds of new properties around the globe in 30 different countries, rigorously evaluating each one on a standard set of criteria and visiting them anonymously.

Says theshowroom…
‘We are delighted’, says theshowroom proprietor-chef Bruce Robertson.

‘At theshowroom, we have been focused on creating a unique international dining experience and it is a huge coup for us to be amongst the best restaurants in the world. This is very motivating for theshowroom team. Now it’s up to us to keep impressing our loyal local and international customers!’

Says Jardine…
Jardine co-owner Wilhelm Kühn says, Its Jardine restaurants first birthday this month and we couldnt have wished for a bigger present than the Condé Nast listing together with our third place in the Africa and Middle East region of San Pellegrinos World Top 50 Restaurants released last week.

Congratulations to Bruce and all at theshowroom, its fantastic for Cape Town to have such acclaimed restaurants. Wed like to thank our staff for their hard work the past year and, above all, our loyal patrons for visiting us time and again, even in recent months when it was sometimes difficult to get a table at Jardine. Our restaurant is still in its infancy; the best of Jardine Restaurant is yet to come.

Condé Nast Travelers Jardine listing: Jardine is a welcome addition to a part of Cape Town better known for its clubs and film studios. The first solo venture from chef George Jardine (most recently of Sydneys Altitude, in the Shangri-La hotel), the bi-level restaurant has a ground-floor bar with bold red walls, deep sofas, and an extensive lounge menu. Upstairs, the display kitchen lets diners spy on chefs composing tians of fresh mushrooms with chicken livers and foie gras, and the signature lobster with basil risotto and smoked tomatoes (entrées, $13–$22).

Condé Nast Travelers theshowroom listing: theshowroom may be connected to Bloomsburys, a car dealership gleaming with Ferraris and Lamborghinis, but it is in the theater-style kitchen of chef Bruce Robertson that the real show takes place. Its high visibility all the way, from the dramatic vertical wine rack that has the sommelier regularly scurrying up a ladder, to the split-level dining room with transparent chairs and glass balustrades that seems to have been designed for voyeurs. Robertsons cheeky menu has playful touches—as in the spider crab broth garnished with champagne jelly and a dried wide-eyed fish, and the lemon-braised fish of the day with lettuce tart, pea puree, and fennel crisps (entrées, $9–$13).
