Located within Cityzen Internet Café on Gordon Road is Falafel Fundi, the new eatery by renowned falafel king Saar Benhamoo that’s serving up glorious falafels and sides to Morningside suburbanites. After starting out at markets, the Falafel Fundi brand now has a home base where Saar can prepare his street food from scratch while you wait.

Saar’s traditional herb and chickpea falafels have become a popular staple at markets like The Morning Trade and Rooftop Night Market, and been dubbed by many as the best in town. The golden deep-fried chickpea balls are fried to order and are bundled up inside soft flatbread or roti with a colourful salad combo of your choice, chilli and tahini or hummus. While the falafels are the main event at the new store, a small menu will also feature classic baguettes and omelettes with a Middle Eastern twist, as well a Mediterranean platter, on which Saar’s famed hummus will make an appearance.

Having joined forces with the sociable Cityzen Café, the Falafel Fundi space boasts a balmy courtyard dressed in quirky local art and a succulent garden for those wanting to dine alfresco. Alternatively, hungry worker bees can grab a spot inside the internet café and tuck into falafel wraps while they check emails.
