Put people who love coffee together and good things are bound to happen. It was just a few years ago that three friends were joking about the idea of starting something new.
The kind of idea that most people shrug off and instead keep confined to their daydreams. Luckily for us, this wasn’t the case with these three gents who turned the idea into a reality. Rosetta Roastery, founded by Rob Cowles, Jono Le Feuvre and Jeffrey van Aswegen, focuses purely on single origin coffee.
You won’t find any blends here. I joined Rob and Jono at their roastery in the Woodstock Industrial Centre for an informal cupping. We take a seat at the large wooden table and three small cups are placed in front of me.
First up was an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, which is a bit like taking an early morning stroll through an orange orchard.
Jono explains that they like to personify their coffee. Each has it’s own personality. The Yirgacheffe is like an aging celebrity woman.
Helen Mirren in an orange ball gown comes to mind.
Second in line was an Ethiopian Sidamo, lightly roasted and full of spice. Elegant yet feisty. If it were up to me, I would call it the Alex Wek.
The finale was a Tijuco Preto. A Yellow Bourbon bean sourced from a family run estate in the south of Brazil. Let me tell you, this guy had me at hello. It’s a medium-dark roast with tobacco, leather and gunpowder traits – a bit of a wildcard. This was my favourite and couldn’t think of anyone to epitomise this coffee better than Che Guevara himself.
Check out their website for their current selection of coffee on offer. They deliver twice a week in Cape Town at no cost.
