In South Africa we have some pretty incredible breakfasts. We’ve got this guy, who makes bacon jam, we’ve got The Whippet’s poached egg in tempura batter with crispy bacon, and, because our artisan coffee market got off the ground before a big chain like Starbucks sewed up the market, SA’s got some world-class coffee, too. If you’re in search of the ultimate weekend brunch spot or working breakfast, look no further. Here’s our guide to getting a killer breakfast in the big cities and some notable countryside spots. (Remember to tell us about your favourites in the comments!)

You’re missing the best one – Liquorice & Lime right at the top of Kloof street in Cape Town. That place is an absolute gem with locals and foreigners alike easing out there every day of the week. It’s still got the vibey buzz of Kloof street, but because it’s higher up, it’s very laid back, too. They do to best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever tasted IN MY LIFE! Definitely a must on the Cape Town to-do list.
You’re missing another place-Martins Bakery in Diep River Cape Town. The Bakery has the most amazing quaint coffee shop where one can sit and have delicious baked goods, as well as a variety of sandwiches made with their artisan breads, they also have omelettes and breakfasts.
Check it out:

Here’s another for the Cape Town south peninsula list: Casa Labia in Muizenberg does excellent value breakfasts with crispy pancetta instead of bacon in a completely over the top Italian Palazzo environment with priceless antiques and grand old master oil paintings on every wall. Then pop upstairs to see what art is showing in the gallery and what’s new in the art/craft shop. In summer ask for a table outside with outstanding views of Surfer’s Corner and the expanse of False Bay. It’ll blow your mind!
Thanks for the additional info Louis Steyn.
Not for the calorie conscious, try Karoo Cattle and Land, Irene’s Boere Buffet Breakfast which has been on the go and a firm favourite every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday for the last three years! Eggs fried or scrambled to order in front of you and then add as much as you like from ten or more iron pots featuring bacon, boerewors, chicken sausage, liver, savoury mince, dishes of the day, vetkoek, skilpaadjies, chicken livers, onions, paptert, pap, sous, and more. There’s home made bread, baby muffins, jams etc and fantastic melkkos with cinnamon sugar. Really fresh fruit salad, yoghurt and cereals are also there for a token contribution to those who want less impact on their cholesterol levels!
Almost no mention of Northern Suburbs restaurants – Greens Cafe, Plattekloof, Pulp Kitchen, Chocolate, Soet, Durbanville – all very good!
Hi everyone. Thanks for your feedback. Keep the comments coming!
Another one: Post, in Braamfontein. They’re open early mornings, great value for money, and their breakfasts are very good.
Ah, such a pity that Melissa’s, Doppio Zero and Nu food didn’t make the list!
You’re missed Baked Bistro in Bakoven. Beautiful home-made breakfast wraps, fresh pastry and artisan breads and origin coffee!
Thanks for the comment Trish. We’re a big fan of their coffee (particularly passed through the car window on a morning commute!)
