Today The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, announced its list of restaurants ranked from 51st to 100th and Two Cape Town restaurants have been included. Fyn Restaurant, situated on the 5th floor of the Speaker’s Corner building in Cape Town’s city centre, has been awarded the number 92 spot with La Colombe in Constantia sitting at 81.
Fyn opened in late 2018 by chef Peter Tempelhoff and his partners, Jennifer Hugé and Ashley Moss. The trio has been wowing guests with their kaiseki-style menus, honouring Japanese techniques, with touches of South African elements. In 2019, the restaurant was ranked number 5 at the Eat Out Restaurant Awards.

Peter says: “We’ve only been operating for a short time – this is our third year. I think it’s really good for the industry as a whole, and I think it will have a positive knock-on effect for others, and encourage them, and show them there’s an opportunity for them to also get there.”
He says that when he first picked up a World’s 50 Best magazine (they used to publish it), he saw La Colombe being featured. “Franck Dangereux really put SA food on the map way back in 2003 when they got to number 12 in the world, which was – and is – phenomenal for a South African restaurant. So to be in that company nearly 19 years after I first saw that magazine is quite amazing.”
La Colombe has again made the list and the team, headed by Scot Kirton and James Gaag, also scooped the Restaurant of The Year Award at the 2019 Eat Out Restaurant Awards. James says, “It’s a phenomenal accolade and we’re so grateful to be moving in the right direction. Seeing our creativity, food and passion up there among the best in the world is simply incredible. The team is thrilled, especially given what the industry has been through in the past 18 months or so – with the awards themselves not taking place in 2020 due to the pandemic. While we will celebrate this as a team – and take a few moments to clink a glass of MCC – we’ll do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and perspective.”
