If, like certain members of our team, you almost lost your mind when Cadbury’s discontinued the Sweetie Pie – and uttered a sigh of relief when Beyers announced they’d be taking over the recipe – we have some critical news for you: they’ve brought out two new flavours.
Beyers says the new strawberry and dark chocolate flavours, which hit the shelves in September, will be permanent additions to the range. But does this mean the original vanilla in milk chocolate version might disappear?
“It’s still on sale and will always remain as the original and first Sweetie Pie flavour,” Cathal Queally from Beyers Chocolates’ marketing department assures us. (So relax and abandon those plans to stockpile!) Cathal goes on to reveal that Beyers also plans to launch several limited-edition flavours in 2016. Fans of the company’s Facebook page get to decide what those flavours will be.
Deeply committed to our jobs, the Eat Out team set out to taste the new additions. Here is the transcript of that tasting.
“The pink one is amazing. I prefer it to the normal one. I think it’s a childhood thing, though. Where I grew up in Springs you could get that stuff in a jar.”
“It tastes like Tinkerbell make up!”
“Is that a good thing?”
(Noncommital) “Yes. Like those Tinkerbell lipsticks you used to get, which smelled like fake strawberries.”
(Sceptical look)
“The dark chocolate one is so great. It’s really, really good. (Nodding). Hey, hey, hey …”
(Nodding vigorously) “It’s SO good.”
“Normally, you get the sweetness of the middle and then the chocolate is sweet as well and it’s just sweet, sweet, sweet. This is a nice contrast.”
“It’s so vanilla-ey. It’s like the dark chocolate almost intensifies the vanilla.”
Our verdict: So Sweetie Pie. Much wow.
