No less than five South African restaurants made it into the worlds top-100 best restaurants list with the announcement of the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2009.
Two of our own restaurants appeared on the iconic 50 Best list: in 37th place, Le Quartier Français (up 13 places from 2008) and in 38th place, the Prudential Eat Out Restaurant of the Year, La Colombe.
Jardine (79th), Aubergine (96th) and Rust en Vrede (98th) all make an appearance on the top-100 list.
Margot Janse and Luke Dale-Roberts both attended the glitzy ceremony held in London on 20 April, where Janse was also awarded the Aqua Panna Best Continental Award for the highest-ranking restaurant in the Middle East and Africa.
For the fourth year in a row, Ferran Adrià topped the worldwide list compiled by 806 chefs, critics and other industry experts, whilst Heston Blumenthals The Fat Duck retained the second place.
This years list has been noted for the host of young talent and more casual entries it includes.

Have been eating luncheons for 10+ years with my wife, the minister, the sailor, the Frenchman et al in the cafe/bistro/tapas and bite balle bar and had our socks knocked off at extraordinary value for money. This is my wife and my favourite restaurant in South Africa. You DONT have to spend R1300 in the Tasting Room to sample Margot’s food , go to the bistro bar for lunch if you like really good food at reasonable prices. Also, Her reasonably priced wine collection is very clever, especially the Chenin Blancs, lots, for the minister that is. The Menu changes radically every 18 months, so it’s pot luck. Study the short menu carefully to ensure you choose what you like, don’t rush. 10/10 no question, the Lady is good! CR
