As the name suggests, Honest Chocolate is known for its uber-indulgent hot chocolate that is made from scratch. To make the hot chocolate, the café uses its own dark chocolate that is vegan and gluten-free and produced in its factory in Woodstock, which is then mixed with milk, water and cane sugar. Priced at R55 and available all year round, the hot chocolate comes in various flavours including Biscoff, Mexican Spices, Christmas Orange, Peanut Butter Bomb and Almond Chocolate Spread, apart from the regular hot chocolate. For a vegan version, the milk in the hot chocolate can be replaced with oat milk for an additional R8.

A household name in the Mother City, Coco Safar is known for its decdent hot chocolate. Made from scratch, the café combines dark, milk and white premium French Valrhona chocolate in a secret blend for its hot chocolate, that is priced at R48. The Café Mocha, which is a combination of hot chocolate and coffee is priced at R45. Both hot chocolate varieties are served with a shot of sparkling water as a palate cleanser, as well as a complimentary lemon-poppy seed madeleine. The hot chocolate is available throughout the year.

Possibly the only eatery to serve Mexican hot chocolate in Cape Town, El Burro is known for its spicy, rich, thick dark hot chocolate that is a soothing remedy for deary winter days. Priced at R35, the Mexican hot chocolate is a blend of 70% dark chocolate couverture, spices, nuts, sugar and dairy-free cream and is available all year round. The Mexican hot chocolate is also available with dairy-free oat milk for the same price.

For a restaurant that claims to have fine-tuned its hot chocolate recipe over the years to ensure that it is not too watery and not too sweet; with a perfect ratio of chocolate to milk, the hot chocolate at Bread, Milk and Honey is certainly worth trying. Served all year round, the hot chocolate is made using locally sourced white, dark or milk chocolate discs which are then combined with milk, before serving. The dark hot chocolate, white hot chocolate and regular hot chocolate (made with milk chocolate) are all priced at R35 for a large serving and R38 for a jumbo size. Oat or almond milk vegan hot chocolate is also available for an additional R6.

Offering dark and decadent hot chocolate, BUTTER combines locally sourced dark chocolate with hot milk to make its hot chocolate, that is topped with milk froth. Priced at R45 and available all year round, the hot chocolate is served with a complimentary homemade butter cookie. The hot chocolate is also available in a vegan version with oat or almond milk, for an additional R10. BUTTER is contemplating adding more varieties of hot chocolate to its menu for the winter.

Popular for its wide variety of traditional Italian gelato varieties, Moro Gelato also does a spin on the classic Italian hot chocolate, that is made with 70% Belgian chocolate and is so thick that it can be eaten with a spoon! While the classic hot chocolate is priced at R37, hot chocolate with homemade whipped cream, dusted with cocoa or cinnamon is available for R42. You can also request for your hot chocolate to be served with a scoop of gelato or sorbetto, which will cost you R47. Moro Gelato also serves a vegan hot chocolate that is made without any milk – just pure melted chocolate. All varieties of hot chocolate are only available during winter.
