It’s always exciting when a movie comes out and the main storyline is food – better still if a lot of it is shot in a restaurant kitchen.
The latest food film on the circuit (to be released in a few weeks’ time) is Chef. The chef in question, played by Jon Favreau, receives a crushing review by a dreaded food critic, played by Oliver Pratt. The frustrated chef ends up leaving the restaurant to start his own industrious South American-themed food truck. I’ve just watched the funny trailer and it looks great, with actors like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Dustin Hoffman in supporting roles. Plus, there’s plenty of food being chopped and plated and a lot of hustle bustle in the kitchen – just what I like to see.
A few weeks ago I investigated the Durban beachfront, which has undergone a massive upgrade, and was super impressed by the way it turned out. I was also pleasantly surprised and happy to see that one of my favourite food trucks, Afro’s Chicken, has moved into a kiosk-style restaurant there. They make the most awesome succulent, African-inspired chicken. And the burgers are legend, too!
This really funky place adds uniqueness to the promenade, along with a few other new eateries in the same kiosk style.
See you at the movies – and maybe for a little chicken snack afterwards!

The chips are pretty phenomenal, the chicken burgers are good, but don’t waste your time with the chicken strips as they’re not even worth a mention – they’re moist sure, but have little to no flavour at all.
