Eat Out-star restaurant chefs collaborate to celebrate African cooking and indigenous ingredients

Talented award-winning chef duo, Johannes Richter of Eat Out two-star restaurant The LivingRoom at Summerhill Guest Estate and Wandile Mabaso of one-star restaurant Les Créatifs, are collaborating to showcase their shared passion for South African culture and heritage in a memorable dining experience.

Taking place at Les Créatifs in Johannesburg, the dining experience aims to celebrate each of the chefs’ prowess in endemic and indigenous ingredients and African cooking techniques.

This is the first time the dynamic chefs will work together, and Wandile is excited to welcome Johannes into Les Créatifs, commenting on their shared qualities inside and outside of the kitchen: “I think there’s definitely a commonality to our cooking, especially when it comes to creativity, humility, and shared respect for nature and cultural heritage.”

The once-off menu will showcase Wandile’s skills gained from working in Michelin-star kitchens across the world. His passion and unique take on African fine dining will pair with Johannes’s devotion to hyper-local and innovative sustainability-centred cooking, which won him the Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award 2023.

Notably, this will be the first time that Johannes will be cooking in Johannesburg. “I’m equally excited to be bringing a small taste of what we do here in KwaZulu-Natal up to the City of Gold,” he says.

The menu will be split into seven courses, with each chef preparing three that are unique to his talents and flair, and a collaboration on the lamb main course, which will utilise a zero-waste approach of using the animal from nose to tail to create a gastronomically astounding dish.

Each dish will be paired with a suitable wine selected by The LivingRoom sommelier Johanna Richter.

The collaborative dining experience will take place on 19 and 20 July 2024 for both lunch and dinner. The meal will cost R2500 per person.
