You haven’t lived until you’ve eaten nougat from a jar

There are a few things in life that work just as well – or even better – when melted. Think chocolate, marshmallows and cheese. We are pleased to officially nominate a new item to join this canon: nougat.

A South African confectionery producer named Jakhalskos (Afrikaans for ‘jackal’s food’) makes liquid nougat in a jar. It’s creamy, glossy, pale and smooth. No nuts, no horrid synthetic ‘fruit’ bits. Rich in honeyed tones and soft sweetness. Inside the jar are just a handful of delicious ingredients: organic sugar, indigenous honey, free-range egg white, liquid glucose and real vanilla extract.

Liquid nougat openWhy would you want to eat liquid nougat instead of the real thing, you ask? Good question. According to the jar, you can:

– Spread it on pancakes, waffles and sponge cakes.
– Use it to top warm winter puddings.
– Spoon it into meringue nests and top with fresh fruit to make a beautiful pavlova.
– Add a dollop to your coffee.
– Spoon it straight from the jar. (We couldn’t really get past this last serving suggestion.)

You need to get started right away on testing all of the above. That’s an order. We want a report on our desk in the morning.

Jakhalskos liquid nougat is available from the deli at Die Ou Pastorie in Skeerport and from Gourmet Deli.
