If you’re ever lusted after The Pot Luck Club’s famous fish tacos, you’re in for a treat. The Great Eastern Food Bar’s version is a worthy competitor – and we suggest you try one – or four – immediately.
Great Eastern Food Bar was recently named Best Asian Eatery at the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries, voted for by our readers.
The restaurant is a new-style ramen bar in Melville, Johannesburg. Located on the roof of the trendy Bamboo Centre, the tables on the balcony offer a view of the Melville Koppies.
The restaurant was quiet (we went during the week, just before lunch) but it was comfortable and relaxed. Decor is minimalist, with wooden benches and exposed brick walls. Diners have a view of the small, open kitchen – and although the food doesn’t come out particularly quickly, it is all certainly worth the wait.
Dishes on the magnificent menu range from dim sum to crispy scallion pancakes (R30), green papaya salad (R60) and lemongrass and coconut noodles (R120). But we’re here to talk about is the sashimi tacos.
Oh, the sashimi tacos.
The tiny taco is crisp and delicate, and has a satisfying crack on first bite. It’s loaded with a decent portion of fresh, tender trout ceviche.
As the flavours develop, you’ll welcome an oh-so subtle kick of wasabi and fragrant pickled lemon.
It is a thing of true beauty: the ingredients are incredibly fresh and flavours are perfectly balanced.
At R50 for a portion of two, we don’t suggest you share. You’ll want that second one – and we wouldn’t judge you if you ordered another helping, either.
