If the latest developments in food technology are anything to go by, we could soon be dining on Dolly the sheep. But at a culinary forum held in Milan recently, a group of chefs spoke out against meat cloning, reports local news portal, News24.com.
Europes top food safety agency says cloned meat is safe to eat, although the go-ahead for marketing these products has not been given. It is also believed that it will be years before cloning will be widely used or acceptable.
According to the revered British chef, Heston Blumenthal, he would not consider using cloned meat.
We dont know if theyre damaging or what damage they do not only to ourselves but also to the environment, says Blumenthal.
The European Food Safety Authority will give its final opinion on the cloning of meat, in May this year, after a consulting process has been followed with its member states and the industry.
