Cyra set to open at Joburg’s Houghton Hotel with chef Candice Philip at the helm

Johannesburg is set to welcome a new restaurant, Cyra, helmed by talented chef Candice Philip. Named after the Persian word for “sun”, Cyra draws inspiration from the harmony and grace of the evening sunset. The restaurant’s interior will reflect this theme, with decor elements celebrating different textures and warm, soft colours. From a handcrafted chandelier and featured screens to elegant table settings, muted tones will create a calming, sophisticated atmosphere within a classic and elegant space.  

In a social media post, the team expressed their intent: “We’re refreshing the space while retaining the essence that has fostered so many wonderful memories.” Located at the Houghton Hotel, Cyra occupies the space that previously housed Séjour, overlooking the scenic Houghton golf course.

Candice is returning to the spotlight with a seven-course tasting menu. Paired with an array of local and international wines, the menu also offers pescatarian and vegetarian options, catering to a range of preferences.  

Candice expressed her excitement about her new role: “It has been very clear that Joburg has been curious about where I’ve been and [is] eager to experience my food again. I’m super excited to be back in a beautiful setting doing what I love.”

Candice is no stranger to Eat Out, having won the Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star Award in 2018. She cooked at the 2019 Eat Out Restaurant Awards and has held positions as executive chef of Grei restaurant and Restaurant Five Hundred at the Saxon. Throughout her career, Candice has worked alongside some of the industry’s most iconic chefs, like Luke Dale Roberts and David Higgs.  

While keeping the finer details under wraps, Candice gave a hint of what to expect. “I launch the experience with a beautiful lemon bread, a sultry Parmesan donut, and take you on a journey balancing complexity and simplicity.”

Cyra is set to open on 25 October and will operate from Wednesday to Saturday for dinner, and on Sunday for lunch. With its setting and considered menu, it promises to be an exciting new chapter in Johannesburg’s restaurant scene.
