Luca’s Ristorante Italiano is a neighbourhood gem in a neighbourhood that’s seriously lacking in sparkle. Far from the usual red-and-white tablecloth variety of Italian restaurant, Luca’s offers the warm welcome of owner Luca Borella, good service and the kind of positive energy that makes eating here a pleasure. This is the restaurant of choice for those visiting Barnyard Rivonia and the perfect place for stressed-out bridal parties from the Bride & Co. next door to enjoy a bottle of Kaapse Vonkel and some comfort grub after a day of trying on dresses.
With the decidedly Tuscan influences apparent throughout the menu, it’s perhaps surprising that the Luca’s salad is one of the most popular dishes at this restaurant. In fact, so sought-after is the salad that the restaurant has started bottling and selling its delicious secret salad dressing. The fresh asparagus served with gorgonzola sauce is pure delight before indulging in a splendidly rich main meal. Luca’s has pizzas aplenty, with ranges of classics, gourmet and fresh options, and quite a few customers singing the praises of Luca’s calzones. Two whole pages of the menu are dedicated to pastas, with a robust risotto section, but the true connoisseur would browse right past the pizzas and pastas and head straight for the veal. Try the veal Madagascar, with green peppercorns, Dijon mustard, cream and brandy. End off the evening with a sweet wine and a slice of the chocolate mousse cake.
In true Italian style, the wine list will delight the oenophile. There are plenty of Champagnes and MCCs for celebrating special occasions, while a whole section of the wine list is dedicated exclusively to unusual varietals like De Grendel Pinot Gris and Cederberg Bukattaraube for the adventurous wine lover. Of course there’s also a fair selection of classics like Beyerskloof Pinotage and Tokara’s wooded Chardonnay.
Owner Luca keeps a close eye on patrons and staff alike, ensuring smooth and prompt service with a big smile.
Luca’s Ristorante Italiano has all the warmth of a well-loved restaurant. Packed on any given day, the energy and atmosphere of the restaurant, as well as each morsel served, makes for an addictive dining experience.
Agree, my favourite local. Staff have all been there for ever and are friendly and efficient. And a fantastic winelist.
