It’s not too often that I get excited by what the Waterfront offers in the way of restaurants, but on Monday I was super excited and to see that it was Vovo Telo’s opening day at the V&A.
I was famished, which made the thought of having lunch there even better. This is just what’s needed for the area: somewhere fresh and modern that serves fantastic breakfasts and lunches, with some super sweet bakes too.
If you are in Johannesburg or Port Elizabeth you will already know about Vovo Telo’s legendary ricotta hotcakes and their thin-crust pizzas topped with salami, avo and gorgonzola – very good indeed.
At the V&A the view is glorious if you sit outside away from the hustle and bustle. Vovo Telo is also a fully-fledged bakery, so there’s plenty of bread to wrap up and take home.
Cheese seems to be the order of the week. After tasting a whole lot at The Good Food and Wine Show over the weekend, which included my soufflé dem (which, of course, had lots of cheese), last night I watched MasterChef SA with slices of my prized chunk of Dalewood Fromage’s handmade Huguenot, which we ate with fresh honeycomb cut off the beekeeper’s frame. And my husband is making dinner tonight: macaroni cheese, but a bit of a posh version, with some Comté, which a friend gave to me.
I’d also like to tell you about a steakhouse and pub in Plumstead called Pirates where I had a really well prepared steak at the end of last week. The basting sauce is terrific, as are the ribs and the hand-cut chips. As soon as I got back to the office, I raved (like I usually do) about it. A colleague told me on Monday that she and her husband had gone over the weekend and they raved about it too.
Thank you for sharing all of your favourite places to eat with us (and the photos) and your complimentary feedback from my appearance on MasterChef SA. I can't wait to see who wins!
Happy eating and cooking.
