Cape Town’s first street-food festival will take place at Sidestreet Studios in Woodstock on Sunday 27 July from 9am to 3pm. Entrance to the market is free and everyone is welcome.
Some of Cape Town’s most well-known street food entrepreneurs will share their secrets to success in a series of talks at the event. Speakers include pop-up pioneer Yang Zhao, who recently opened her own restaurant, Beijing Opera; the Mucho Gusto team, which runs a Cape Town and Johannesburg based catering company; and Andy Fenner, who has built one of Cape Town’s most reputed and recognisable food brands with Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants. Topics will include: getting started; building your brand with naming, logos and packaging; marketing and social media; knowing when to say no; business planning; street vs retail; and advice from successful entrepreneurs. Tickets to the seminar are R297.95 and are available through quicket.co.za.
The day will end off with a special street-food dinner collaboration prepared by some of the speakers. Tickets to the dinner are limited and can be purchased via quicket.co.za for R379.95. The dinner creators include Ryan McDonagh of Lefty’s, Tebogo Maramza of catering company Kopanong Ke Moveine, Yang Zhao of Beijing Opera, Matthew Freemantle and Andrew Kai of Mucho Gusto, Heather Thompson of SOMA Confection as well as Vanessa Marx, chef at Dear Me and winner of Eat Out’s Rising Star Award in 2013. The meal includes five courses paired with wine. There will also be a cash bar available.
Visit the festival website, www.capetownstreetfoodfestival.co.za, and Facebook page for updates; the hashtag on Twitter is #CTSFF.
A 5-course dinner paired with wine hardly embodies the spirit of street food.
It’s the content and presentation of the dinner that embodies street food.
have to agree with Peter on this one. Street food is fun, messy, eccentric, ready-to-go, eat out of box or paper….wine, uhhhh….not sure.
I agree Peter.
This from Wikipedia “Street food is ready-to-eat food or drink sold in a street or other public place, such as a market or fair, by a hawker or vendor, often from a portable food booth, food cart or food truck.”
Yah not supose to book, just go buy and eat. . Street style with food stalls and all.
Read it again – the dinner is at the end of the day, and separate. Side Street Studios have various day and night food-friendly-functions throughout the year, so you can follow the wikipedia description for street food, as that is what will be on offer from 9am to 3pm.
Since YOU can’t read Michelle, let me highlight what the article says for you, “The day will end off with a special STREET-FOOD DINNER collaboration…”, and as Peter and the rest had already said, a so-called “street-food dinner” paired with wine doesn’t really epitomise the street food premise.

I rest my case your honour.
