Ending world hunger sounds a little like attempting to create world peace: a task so huge that it’s not really even clear where to begin. But according to numbers released by The United Nations, it might just be possible – provided we all work together. Here’s the breakdown.
• There are 196 million fewer people suffering from hunger now than there were in 1990.
• If women in the agricultural industry had the same resources as men, there would be up to 150 million fewer hungry people worldwide
• In developing regions, the number of undernourished people has fallen by 20%
• 376 000 volunteers worldwide are dedicated to ending hunger by 2030
Rise Against Hunger – an international hunger relief organisation with a base here in South Africa – will launch a campaign on Sunday to mobilise even more people to join the movement. This campaign is particularly poignant in this country, where 14 million people – 3.165 million of which are children – suffer from hunger.
Here’s what you can do to help end hunger by 2030:
For every restaurant review we receive, Eat Out donates a meal through Rise Against Hunger’s South African branch. Write a review now.
Rise Against Hunger needs thousands of volunteers to assist with packing meals, to help support warehouse operations and to assist with administrative duties. See upcoming events here.
Use your advocacy to drive change in law, policy and systems. Sign up to become an advocate.
Take initiative and partner with Rise Against Hunger for your company’s CSI intitiative.
Make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor.
A group of 40 to 50 volunteers can pack over 10 000 meals in two hours. Plan one with your school, workplace, faith community or club.
