Cafés opening up near galleries, art stores and linen shops seems to be a burgeoning trend. With that in mind, Cape Town restaurant editor Zola Nene was only too happy to try the northern suburbs branch of 1987 Eatery, located inside the showroom of popular fabric supplier Hertex.

Breakfast options include a trendy smoothie bowl and eggs Benedict served with smoked salmon or bacon atop toasted ciabatta bread. The generous amount of Hollandaise is perfectly acidic and smooth, earning the dish itself a thumbs up. The breakfast rosti stack, on the other hand, is somewhat disappointing. Though the bacon is lovely and crisp, the potato cake is dense and lacks seasoning, and the amount of sauce forestière is too miniscule to affect the dish one way or the other.
For lunch, choose either the beef or crumbed chicken burger with all the traditional trimmings. There are also pasta options of tomato and mascarpone penne or creamy salmon tagliatelle. For something a little lighter, choose from a selection of salads or the seasonal soup of the day.
For dessert there’s a selection of pastries, as well as some cakes on offer that are beautifully displayed in the fridges at the front of the store.
The freshly squeezed juices are delicious and you’re able to mix and match fruits to make whatever combination tickles your fancy. There’s also a selection of smoothies, hot drinks and soft drinks available.
The staff is attentive and well presented, though they could be a little friendlier.
As 1987 Eatery is situated in a design space, the restaurant carries the same stylish décor offered at Hertex. The space is light, bright and modern. There’s also a beautiful courtyard area in which to sit that is lovely and green, featuring calming foliage.
