Bree Street gets a taco bar: Cabrón

Cabrón Taco Bar, a new Mexican spot, has opened its doors on the popular restaurant strip, Bree Street. Located in the space previously occupied by Easy Tiger, the restaurant is now the pride and joy of first-time restaurant owners and friends Jake Weeden, Drue Thuysman and Troye May.

Their idea to open a Mexican restaurant was sparked by the lack of Mexican street food establishments in the CBD. “We saw it as a bit of a gap in the market. Also, Mexican hangouts always radiate a relaxed, light-hearted vibe, exactly what we envisaged,” explains Jake. With their sights set on a spot in the buzzing CBD, news of the HH Group’s plan to move was just the opportunity they had been waiting for: “We’d been looking for a manageable, intimate venue somewhere in the CBD for the last 18 months,” says Jake, who now describes their spot on trendy Bree Street as a “gold nugget”.

With tacos being their speciality, you can expect exciting fillings such as seared or ceviche-style tuna, smoked beef brisket, smoked pulled pork, and hummus and vegetables. They will also be serving up freshly fried tortilla chip nachos and a traditional Mexican corn salad. Although their plan is to keep the food menu focused and refined, they promise to add a few more items to the menu in the upcoming months.

At the moment refreshing margaritas, tequila, and old-fashioned Coronas are what can be expected on the drinks menu. They’re still creating their cocktail menu, which they plan to introduce over the next two weeks and will feature Mexican-style cocktails. Cabrón Taco Bar is open for lunch and dinner between 11am and 8pm from Monday to Wednesday and between 11am and 10pm from Thursday to Saturday. In May they will also begin serving breakfast, with favourites like breakfast burritos and tacos – filled with scrambled eggs, guacamole and various salsas – sure to make an appearance on the menu, along with coffee.

The master at work.
