Original art by South Africa’s most famous landscape artist, JH Pierneef, gives the wine and food experience at Pierneef à La Motte, our latest Boschendal Style Award nominee, all the more depth.
Situated in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley on the La Motte wine farm, the Pierneef à La Motte restaurant celebrates the region’s rich legacy of art, food, wine and design. Since 2010, owner Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg (of Merchants on Long renown) and CEO Hein Koegelenberg have breathed new life into the area’s history.
Traditional Cape Winelands favourites are given a fresh interpretation by chef Michelle Theron. Based on sustainably sourced local ingredients, a signature dish is the Cape bokkom salad, with the other favourites including the free-range Cape winelands chicken and an unforgettable melktert.
As with the food, historic Cape Dutch architecture and the original Pierneef linocuts that line the walls are given a new spin. Bespoke fabric from Design Team includes a print of Pierneef and his daughter, while the porcelain chandeliers by Ella Lou O’Meara recall the crockery of the Dutch East India Company. Interior designer Christo Barnard has used a soothing white and green colour scheme along with classic but contemporary custom-made furniture from Cape designers James Mudge and Pierre Cronje to create an elegant atmosphere.
Does Pierneef à La Motte have what it takes to be this year’s winner of the Boschendal Style Award? (The winner will be announced at the 2014 Eat Out Restaurant Awards held in November.)
