When COVID-19 brought SA’s hospitality and tourism industry to a standstill, Bidfood SA refused to be a passive victim of the circumstances, seeking instead to field a multi-faceted response to the impact of the pandemic. One of those responses was an exciting public-private collaboration with the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA). An app was developed on behalf of the association to manage COVID-19 health screening for employees, suppliers, patrons and guests in line with government directions and industry protocols. The Travel Safe – Eat Safe app provides a means of tracing contacts (if needed) to help limit the risk of transmission to patrons and guests when using tourist and hospitality facilities. The aim is to encourage and inspire confidence and peace of mind in travellers, patrons, operators and suppliers.

The move to Level 1 has been a step in the right direction after months of lockdown, but as South Africa reopens to international tourism, there has never been a more important priority than ensuring that we do so safely for both staff and guests. Our duty in the tourism and hospitality sector is to inspire confidence that travel to and eating out in South Africa is safe and easy. To do this, it is essential that all tourism and hospitality establishments adopt and adhere to the Travel Safe – Eat Safe protocols and record their compliance.
