When you work in Johannesburg’s most affluent business district, it’s difficult to understand why a great meal is so hard to come by. Of course, when you do eventually find something delicious, it’s practically unaffordable. How it came to be that Sandton’s biggest treasure, the delectable Gwefey, is not on the very top of the average Sandtonite’s “favourite restaurant” list, is beyond us. Everything from the phenomenal setting to the extensive, exotic menu makes it clear that if there’s one place this restaurant belongs, it’s in Sandton.
To think of this restaurant as a Chinese joint is a mistake. Far from soggy noodles and too much soy sauce, Gwefey is a good place to forget what you thought you knew about Asian cuisine. The Gwefey menu pays homage to the subtle complexity of foods from Thailand and various districts in China. Combining fresh, home-grown ingredients with alluring treats imported from the East, the menu offers traditional rice and noodle dishes as well as contemporary takes on Asian classics. Instead of a single starter, opt for a few dishes to share with your dinner guests – the crispy beef strips, Beijing pork dumplings and crispy spring rolls are all good bets. The seafood menu is extensive, and the steamed whole fish with spring onion and ginger is a good option. Of course, no Asian restaurant worth its salt would ever skimp on the Peking duck and Gwefey’s contemporary take on this Asian favourite is presented in two courses. The spicy eggplant dish is an absolute must for vegetarians, but be warned, it’s incredibly spicy!
While the Gwefey starters and mains stay true to its Asian origins, the dessert menu is a little more inclusive with the famous Italian dessert Tiramisu and chocolate mousse making an appearance. The restaurant also puts an Asian spin on Western desserts with dishes like chocolate spring rolls and green tea crème brulée. The fresh fruit platter, as well as the coconut and sweet mango cream desserts are a perfect treat for those who choose to stay on theme.
Aside from a few French options on the sparkling wine list, the Gwefey wine list is a collection of celebrated South African wines. Expect favourites like Beyerskloof Pinotage and Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc. Be warned, though, the mark-up is not insignificant.
Friendly, competent and personal, the service at Gwefey is excellent. The restaurant is extremely accommodating to its patrons, so don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations and alert the chef to your food preferences.
This restaurant has an element of feng shui that is hard to ignore. Enormous glass panels, bent outward, make the space feel almost airy, with beautiful little light features on every table creating a romantic atmosphere. The décor is simple and natural, but also quirky and interesting.
