Having a dry January? Keep your booze-free pledge with these five great bottled drinks made by hand and with care in Cape Town.
Billed as “authentic craft soda without added bullshit”, this bottle of cloudy, fizzy fruit juice delivers refreshing and authentic appley flavour. Apples from Elgin are pressed right where they’re picked and the juice is bottled and capped in small batches by hand in Cape Town. With a little bit of water added for drinkability and C0₂ for sparkle, Apple FIZZ contains neither preservatives nor sugar and is a single-strength juice, meaning it’s not reconstituted from a concentrate, says owner Karsten Fölk, who is also the owner of Juicebox. Order your own at Dapper Coffee Co., Deluxe Coffeeworks, The General Store, Jason Bakery, Kamili and Tamboerswinkel. FIZZ Cooldrinks has also launched Pineapple FIZZ made from pineapples from Bathurst in the Eastern Cape, and a grape version is in the works. Visit the Facebook page for more info.
The world’s first “non-alcoholic gin and tonic” might be a misnomer, given the absence of the gin – isn’t that just tonic? – but it tastes just like the real thing: slightly bitter, fragrant and citrusy. Crafted with aromatic botanical extracts, The Duchess has the refreshing bite you expect from a G&T, but it’s free of both sugar and alcohol. The drink contains notes of juniper berries, orange peel, all spice, star aniseed and devil’s claw, a plant native to southern Africa that lends a bitter aromatic profile to the drink. Buy The Duchess at Giovanni’s Deli World, Giulio’s Café, Haas, House of H, Issi, La Petite Tarte, The Shortmarket Club, The Secret Gin Bar, Sneaky Sausage and Workshop 17 Café. Visit the website for more info.
Apples from Elgin are also the foundation for this non-alcoholic drink made by Little Wolf Brewery, but this time they’re complemented by the zesty flavour of hops. The soda has a tropical fruit scent and herbal finish, without overly sweet sugariness. Owner-brewer Stefan Wiswedel recommends it on ice, but it is simply delicious sipped cold from the bottle or a glass. Order Hopped Apple Soda at A Touch of Madness, Bacon on Bree, Baconville, Culture Club Cheese (where is it especially good with the cheese platter and pickles), Empire Café, Hello Sailor, IYO Burgers, Mulberry & Prince, Rolling Wood Surf Store and Under the Cypress. Buy it to take home at some liquor stores and online at Cybercellar and Yuppiechef. Little Wolf also makes hibiscus cider, dry hopped cider and Cape dry tonic water with cinchona bark and citrus. Made from fermented tea, kombucha contains healthy cultures and is said to naturally detox the system and improve digestive health. Tangy, zippy and lightly fizzy, Theonista Kombucha is brewed and bottled by hand in small batches in Woodstock, and sells in 330ml, 500ml and 1L bottles. The base is made from tea and botanical blends and flavoured by fruit and root extracts without added sugar, preservatives, colourants, or other “junk”. Kombucha (or ’booch) is an excellent hangover remedy, especially the ginger flavours, according to founder and brewmistress Meghan Werner. Flavours include the likes of ginger, pomegranate, guava and mango paired with various tea blends like rooibos, honeybush, buchu and green tea. You can find it on tap at Clarke’s and Loading Bay, and Theonista will be piloting kombucha draught at select Wellness Warehouse cafés starting with Cavendish in early 2017. “We are also preparing to offer kegs of kombucha throughout most of SA in collaboration with a national craft beer and beverage distributor.” You can also buy a brew-your-own kit if you want to start making it at home. Theonista also produces Ye Olde Fashioned Ginger Beer, a naturally fermented option infused with organic rooibos. Visit the website for more info, and order some online.
Evoking a dose of old-school medicine, with its dumpy brown bottle and plastic screw-top lid, Potion is a remedy for caffeine addicts who like it chilled. Cold brewed using only three ingredients – coffee, water and love – Potion is the ideal drink for those who are avoiding sugary, boozy drinks, but still want a bit of a kick. Owner Niel Bekker says that when you extract flavours from coffee slowly at a low temperature, you get a different flavour profile from that of a quick, hot brew, and the terroir of the grounds is more pronounced. “As for beans, we hosted our own little World Cup to see which region could produce the best cold brew. In the end, we decided on Central America, known for its bold, chocolatey coffees. We have also been fooling around with an African blend that we think will make quite a splash once we get it right.” Buy Potion at the V&A Food Market, Truth Coffee on Buitenkant Street, Babylonstoren in Franschhoek and Superette in Woodstock.
