5 great Chinese takeaway spots in Cape Town

If you’re the type of person that secretly celebrates when dinner plans are cancelled, you’ve come to the right place. While dining out is always a treat, it’s hard to beat an evening on the couch with your favourite takeaway, a bottle of wine, and a solid series marathon. For your next night in, here are five great Chinese takeaway spots in Cape Town, serving everything from sweet-and-sour pork and chicken chow mein to black-bean beef and crispy duck.

Chef Pon’s Asian Kitchen (Gardens)

While this spot serves an array of Asian cuisines, their Chinese meals are particularly popular. Start things off with Asian tapas portions of veggie spring rolls filled with fried egg and bean sprouts, a selection of dim sum, or wonton chicken noodle soup. Poultry options feature classic Cantonese-style chicken and cashew nuts, or duck Mandarin, while the beef with black-bean sauce remains a top pick. If it’s seafood you’re after, order simple steamed kingklip with soya sauce, or tuck into some sweet-and-sour prawns.

Chuck Yang’s (Rondebosch)

Fans have followed Taiwanese cook Chuck Yang from his popular restaurant in Monte Vista to this good-value shop in the Southern Suburbs. You’ll find chicken, beef, pork or fish here, done in flavours of sweet and sour, coriander and sweet basil or honey and chilli. Popular signature dishes of prawns with spring onion and garlic, black-bean beef, and the ever-popular piquant General Chicken will satisfy cravings.

He Sheng (Sea Point)

If you’re on the hunt for some good, authentic flavours, this Atlantic Seaboard eatery is the place. The vast menu features seafood, pork, beef and chicken dishes. There are also delicious soups and dim sum options for lighter meals; be sure to try the wonton soup. Other favourites include pork-and-prawn dumplings, spring-onion pancakes, beef rolls and sweet-and-sour pork.

Monk’s Chinese (Cape Town and Mowbray)

While this Chinese favourite doesn’t have a shop front, the delivery system works like a well-oiled machine and is ideal for a lazy meal. Place your order on their website and prepare for a night in with some damn tasty takeaway food. The vast array of meals ranges from vegetarian and seafood, to beef, pork and chicken. Start things off with hot and sour soup before moving onto one of the mains. The cashew-nut chicken is a tasty choice and the sweet-and-sour pork or crispy beef is everything you want in a Chinese meal. Order yours with a side of egg-fried rice or smoky noodles. There are also deluxe meals, with the crispy duck pancakes being a firm favourite.
