Avoid at all costs. Worst restaurant in Stellenbosch. Menus look like they were printed on toilet paper. Unlaminated and unsleeved. Like you find at a fish and chips takeaway shop . It took 20 minuts for the waitor to notice us and bring us a menu after she herself showed us to our seats. Then after another 20 minuts of no service we left dissapointed.

Dear Manager
Last night we came to Wijnhuis for a 23rd birthday for a classy, fine dining experience and what we received was an infuriating evening of waiting 1,5hours for food, 30 minutes at first to be seated due to a booking error to which a rude manageress scolded the gentleman whose birthday it was, not at all being accomodating to us and making a huge fuss and rolling her eyes because we had 3 extra people than she had set out for, despite Kent booking for more than this.
The waiter was sweet but so incompetent. We had to ask him to collect our menus, unused glasses, wine menus, empty bread baskets etc to rid clutter off the table. We were ignored for most of the evening. Drinks took about 45 minutes of pleading to order. No manager came to ask if we were fine at any stage of our eating. When we went to enquire about a birthday cake and complaim about lack of service the manager was lazing on her arm and belittled the enquirors and told us to "go to spur" if we wanted celebration.
Just because we are students, I feel like we were really taken advantage of and not served or treated at all like paying customers. There was no etiquette and we were so miserable whilst being there.Further, the waiter got the orders timing wrong and brought out a shank and a sirloin at 8. We all only ate at 9. Their dishes sat there freezing for an hour. We asked for it to be kept warm and about 30 minutes after asking and asking, was it only done. How is this possible to happen at an allegedly upper class restaurant?
The food is always delicious however FURTHER problems unfurled after getting our meat but being told to wait for the chips as the waiter was busy serving another table and chips were not made yet. 10 minutes later, chips arrived and sides were also all late. No apologies just thrown down and left. Then the most disappointing aspect of the evening was the other manageress' behaviour when she came to take a payment at the table. She firstly belittled us. Then when we addressed a complaint about lack of service she became so aggressive, shouting over us to tell us it wasnt her fault but the waiters and the kitchens. We would have been satisfied with a simple apology, it is not like we were asking for free food, we came with the intention of having starters, mains and dessert as the birthday boys parents had funded this, however after the abomination of an evening we just wanted to eat having been there since 7!
The manager screamed and shouted her way out of the situation, it was so shocking that all the other patrons were watching, I wish we had this on camera. Fine dining was never present at one stage of our evening and the gentleman whose birthday it was, was ruined.I cannot express how angry I am to be treated so poorly. I am a student but will never come here again and will tripadvisor this review and I am sure the 11 other guests will to as we were so horrified by what turned out to ruin our night. The sneering last comment of your manager was "yeah, sure, the customer is king" to which she stormed off on and rolled her eyes. I may not be in hospitality but this is never how I have been treated in all my restaurant experiences.
Your managers really need to be reviewed and waiters trained better or no one will want to eat there as we feel now.I hope this finds you well and you can address these issues.

The most appalling thing about Wijnhuis is that the restaurant's owners take the waiters' credit card tip and use it to pay the staff...

My wife and I flew down to Cape Town to celebrate my daughter's 19th birthday. Our guesthouse in Stellenbosch recommended Die Wijnhuis. I went there over lunchtime on 21 / 8/ 2012 and reserved a specific table with the manager, overlooking Andringa Street for the evening. Lo and behold on arrival we found 3 inebriated businessmen occupying our table. Some kind of vague excuse was reluctantly offered but clearly it was a case of "like it or lump it ". At this point I actually wanted to leave and in retrospect I should have. The evening unfolded in a disaster with disinterested service (we had 3 different waiters during the course of the evening) and mediocre food. I also noticed the soiled linen that Chris James mentioned. This is a sorry excuse for a restaurant with an arrogant attitude to boot. I forgot to thank them for spoiling my daughter's 19th birthday, but I suppose nobody is perfect .
