They say that "Carne likes to let steak do the talking, from the moment the waiters parade a platter of quality meat before your table" Which unfortunately was not the case last night because we decided at exactly 9:30pm that we wanted to go to Carne Kloof for dinner , mind you their kitchen closes at 22:00. My friend called and made a reservation for a table and highlighted the closing time. But where there is a determined meat lover , there is a way. I called again at exactly 9:43 pm and asked them to please prepare my meal and that I was on my way.
Alongside prime beef, lamb and venison, you will get to see hanger steak, spider steak, prime rib on the bone. One of the signature dishes is the 1.2 kg La Fiorentina T-bone, a fine choice for a hungry nation which is what we opted for as there was three of us and all very hungry. This to be followed by their decadent chocolate fondant which I always argue that it needs to come standard with the ice cream! (story for another day this ice cream one)
The food was ,as always amazing and the glass of Optima went perfectly well with the meat. As sides we had the mashed potato and spinach. Now the mash potato at Carne is another story I want to explore another day! Never in the history of potatoes has mash tasted that good!
Even though it was late and you could see they were preparing to close , we were not rushed . One did not get a sense of "you need to leave"
Great food. Great service .. Great great Great!
Carne Kloof is slowly but surely starting to replace Carne on Keerom as my fave Carne!

My wife and I had dinner at carne in Kloof street in December 2014.
The food and service was excellent, so much so that I have been a staunch ambassador of the restaurant to anyone wanting a steak.
I really could not speak highly enough about the steak I had enjoyed at the restaurant.
Tonight my wife and I returned, looking forward to the same experience.
We were rudely disappointed.
My wife ordered the Spider steak, which was very good.
I ordered the rump, unfortunately my steak seemed excessively salty.
At first I thought it was the fries, which I returned, only to find that my steak was still salty. To cut a long story short, the steak had been given a dose of salt whilst on the grill - something I enjoy ordinarily, but this time it was excessive.
I returned the rump and reordered another asking for no salt to be added.
I duly received it and on paying the bill was charged for my returned "salty" rump and the second rump.
Poor form.
I've gone from an unwavering Carne brand ambassador to a disgruntled diner within 2 hours.
I did protest, but the Manageress on duty felt I ought to pay.
Oh well I won't be back.
Pity.

Carne on Kloof was outstanding. The place has a great feel to it, and the service is top notch. Try the carpaccio and the tartare for starters. The Hanger steak is the best cut by far, full of flavour and as soft as fillet. I

Wednesday 28th April - took three friends from Gauteng to Kloof St, Carnè and had a truly superb meal from start to finish, i.e. while the various steaks were excellent, so too were al accompaniments from veg through to a top class 'Fondant'
Top class outing in warm relaxing atmosphere and very good value!
Wish you great success - John van der spuy
