Max Bagels is a New York style bagel bar in the centre of Cape Town. Choose from New York classics (all with cream cheese as standard) including salt beef brisket, pickle and mustard; smoked trout with caper berries and pickled red onion; pastrami with sauerkraut and emmenthal; bacon, avo and tomato; and grilled fennel and leek. There's also a revolving special. Bagel choices include plain, spelt, poppy seed and ‘everything’ (caramelised onion, garlic, caraway and poppy seeds) bagels.

I got a delicious bacon, avo and tomato bagel this morning. It had plentiful crispy bacon, half a beautifully ripe avo spread on top, thinly sliced tomatoes and thick lashings of cream cheese. So good. The only problem is that the guy behind the counter (who was very dashing and charming) handled money, card machine, till etc and then went straight back to the food station to slice open and butter my bagel without washing his hands or donning gloves. Not cool!
There are few things that make me happier than a simple dish, made well. Max Bagels do bagels, and they do them really well. I love that they offer a spelt bagel - which is for some reason fine for some wheat-free people like me - but has that hard-to-come-by soft, white bread texture. Their salt beef brisket bagel is spectacular with it's sweet and sour pickle and Dijon mustard. I work in the area, and have to ration myself to one per month to avoid myself from bankruptcy by bagel.
