Chefs and farmers unite for a culinary showcase of indigenous and heritage crops

Get ready for a one-of-a-kind culinary experience as South African chefs join forces with small farmers from Strydkraal, Limpopo, to showcase the rich flavours of indigenous and heritage crops. The competition requires chefs to work hand-in-hand with the farmers, using Nguni beef and traditional vegetables to craft delicious and innovative dishes.

The participating chefs will have access to a wide array of ingredients sourced directly from the farmers. Alongside prime cuts and offal from Nguni cattle, they will incorporate ingredients such as morogo (including thepe, leroto, morogo wa dinawa, etc.), gourds like lerotse, and beans like ditlou (also known as Bambara nuts and jugo beans). This diverse selection will inspire unique and mouthwatering creations.

The central theme of the competition revolves around reinventing traditional ingredients into modern and exciting dishes. Chefs are encouraged to maintain authenticity and respect for the ingredients while infusing their innovative culinary skills.

These are the chefs who will be taking part:

  1. Themba Chauke – the Presidency in Pretoria
  2. Andile Somdaka – Eziko in Midrand
