Food

Die Boord offers standard family-friendly fare, so you’ll find something for everyone, even the fussy eaters! You’ll find all the classic favourites under starters: garlic snails, feta-stuffed jalapeno chillies, onion rings, calamari rings and crumbed mushrooms. The focaccia is highly recommended for garlic lovers, although the base is perhaps a touch too thin and crunchy.

The pap chips, served with chakalaka, add a lovely South African flair to the menu. For mains, you can’t go wrong with a burger or pizza, although the highlight when it comes to the burgers is undoubtedly the perfectly soft, fresh bun. For something more substantial, tuck into one of their main meals, which come with your choice of roasted vegetables, chips, sweet potato fries or a side salad.

The sweet potato fries are delicious – slightly crispy on the outside and tender and sweet when you bite into them. The pork spareribs, on the other hand, are slightly overcooked and tough, although the basting is deliciously tangy. Kids under 12 years can choose from their own special menu, which also offers all the child-friendly favourites, such as fish fingers and chicken strips.

Drinks

The wine list is small with the usual varietals on offer and at least one by-the-glass option per varietal. However, one special touch is that they offer wines from the surrounding area, so now’s your chance to try wines from Badsberg, Botha Kelder, Riebeek Cellars and Merwida

They also offer a selection of beers and spirits as well as milkshakes and hot and cold drinks. Look out for the “Drink Local” sticker on their menu. The Flippenice Fizzy Drink range is particularly refreshing for those looking for a non-alcoholic option.

Service

The service is friendly and welcoming, with the restaurant manager regularly checking on customers. Communication between the kitchen and wait staff is a bit stunted, however, with mains flying out of the kitchen before the starters are finished.

Ambience

The location is definitely what makes this well worth a stop. On sunny days, choose to sit outside on the grass overlooking the ducks waddling in the pond while the kids play in the park. On cooler days, the deck area is covered, so you can still keep an eye on the kids while being sheltered from the elements.

And on very cold days, head inside to the deli area, where a fire warms up the room. And while you’re there, be sure to grab an item or two from the deli to take home. A range of homeware and food items are on offer (although note that some of the items come from further afield and aren’t all made locally).
